David Luiz Joins Torres At Chelsea. Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Benfica defender David Luiz on a five-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
The Brazilian and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres both beat the 11pm cut-off to join the Barclays Premier League champions, who splashed out an incredible £75million on the pair.
Striker Torres arrived for a reported £50million from Liverpool, smashing the transfer record between British clubs, while Benfica finally allowed defender Luiz to move on in a £25million-plus deal.
Luiz, 23, said on Chelsea's website: "I am delighted to be joining a big English club, and I know very well the quality that Chelsea has.
"It is a major challenge for me but I am determined and confident in my ability to adapt to this excellent league, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates."
Luiz will not be eligible for the Blues' Champions League knockout stage campaign after featuring for Benfica this season.
Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay said: "David Luiz is one of the great defensive prospects in world football, and already a Brazilian international.
"I am sure he will prove a valuable addition to the Chelsea squad."
Chairman Bruce Buck added: "It is a delight to have completed this transfer for a fantastic young footballer who we have admired for some time.
"David has played in the Champions League and the squad now has a more experienced look to it that will hopefully serve us well for the rest of this season and going forward."
Midfielder Nemanja Matic, on loan at Vitesse Arnhem from Chelsea, will move to Benfica in the summer as part of the deal.
